Il brano, abbozzato nei primi anni ottanta, era stato originariamente composto per Meat Loaf. Tuttavia l’etichetta discografica del cantante rifiutò di pagare Steinway e lui preferì quindi affidare il brano a Bonnie Tyler.

Secondo Playbill, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” è apparsa nel musical ‘Dance of the Vampires’. Steinman ha rivelato che ciò non era sbagliato. “In realtà l’ho scritta perché fosse una canzone d’amore per i vampiri”. Infatti Jim Steinman, l’autore del brano, in un primo tempo la scrisse per un musical basato su Nosferatu, uno dei vampiri più celebri di ogni tempo.
L’eclissi lunare
Inoltre Steinman ha rivelato che dietro alla scrittura di “Total Eclipse of the Heart” c’era l’idea di una eclissi lunare. La spiegò così: “La maggior parte delle canzoni pop parla del lato lirico dell’amore, del lato piacevole. A me è sempre piaciuto scrivere dell’altro lato, del lato più oscuro. Un’eclissi sembrava l’immagine perfetta per descrivere quando qualcuno è totalmente sopraffatto dall’amore. È come un’eclissi. Non c’è più luce.”
