Lui si chiama Rudi Dolezal, è un produttore-regista di origine austriaca, il cui nome, per gli amanti del genere, è indissolubilmente legato a quello dei Queen e di Freddie Mercury in particolare, di cui era amico personale. Ha alle spalle una carriera incredibile avendo prodotto e realizzato video musicali e docufilm con i nomi più grandi del panorama musicale mondiale, da Michael Jackson a Bruce Springsteen e i Rolling Stones, solo per citarne alcuni. A breve uscirà un suo libro proprio su Freddie Mercury, dove racconterà il frontman dei Queen da un punto di vista personalissimo, fatto di ricordi e racconti. L’intervista di Annamaria Martorana.

Rudi, c’è una domanda a cui vorresti rispondere e che non ti è ancora stata posta?

Si, vorrei che tu mi chiedessi perché ho scritto un libro su Freddie Mercury e perché adesso, quasi 30 anni dopo la sua morte. Freddie era mio amico. Non è facile scrivere un libro su un amico… è emotivamente forte. Ho aspettato 25 anni prima di iniziare a farlo. Ma dopo aver letto così tanti libri su Freddie che non erano veritieri e contenevano così tante cose sbagliate, nel 2017 ho deciso di iniziare. Il mio libro era stato originariamente chiamato “My story” per poi arrivare al definitivo “My friend Freddie”. Ed è questo il mio libro, la mia storia, la storia di un giovane dai capelli lunghi, un hyppie di Vienna che voleva diventare uno dei migliori video director musicali del mondo.  E Freddie è diventato il mio mentore, il mio insegnante e, sì, il mio amico. Il mio libro non è un’altra biografia, ma include solo storie, avventure e segreti di cui personalmente ho fatto parte. Non ci sono “ha detto”, ma avvenimenti situazioni, feste, set cinematografici, scherzi dove ero presente.

E quindi cosa racconti in questo libro?

Racconto storie mai raccontate, cose successe dietro le quinte nelle riprese dei video, dei viaggi con e per Freddie & i Queen dall’altra parte del mondo, da Londra a New York, dall’India al Brasile, da Montreux a Budapest. Freddie in tour, Freddie il mascalzone, Freddie come mecenate, Freddie privato, fino all’ultima intervista con lui e l’ultima volta che Freddie si trovava davanti a una telecamera – la mia macchina fotografica (durante “Days of our Lives”…). E ricordo ancora la terribile telefonata del suo manager e mio caro amico Jim Beach, quando mi ha detto che Freddie non c’era più. Tutto questo e molto altro è nel mio libro – insieme a molte foto e opere d’arte inedite del mio archivio personale, mai viste prima e spezzoni dei miei video e sensazioni speciali. Bonus come un disegno esatto dalla casa di Freddie e soprattutto il “salotto” di Garden Lodge (la casa londinese di Freddie dove è morto nel 1991 ndr). Questo libro è un’opera d’amore per il mio amico Freddie.

Il tuo lavoro come produttore e come regista sta andando alla grande. Recentemente hai vinto il Platinum Remi Award per aver diretto il video della rockstar tedesca Peter Maffay, e questo dopo aver già ottenuto il Gold Remi Award per il video “Get Together”. Quanto sono importanti questi premi per te e per la tua carriera?

Il Platinum Remi, che è considerato come l’Oscar dell’industria”, è un premio che registi famosi come Steve Spielberg, Martin Scorsese o Francis Ford Coppola hanno vinto prima di me, è molto importante, così come i Grammy per il mio documentario “Freddie” e il mio documentario “Miles Davis” o la “Golden Rose of Montreux” per “Queen-Magic Years”. Sono premi che dimostrano che il mio lavoro e la creatività è compreso da importanti personaggi internazionali e questo è gratificante. Ma quando uno dei miei adorabili figli, Ruby di 17 anni e Benny di 14 mi dicono: “Papà, ti amo!”, questo è per me molto più importante di qualsiasi Grammy o Platinum Award, o adesso del Rock’n Roll hall of fame.

Sono sicura che ti vengono poste molte domande sulla tua intensa collaborazione con i Queen e con Freddie, dato che avevi un’amicizia speciale con lui, ma vorrei che ci dicessi qualcosa anche sugli altri membri della band. Ad esempio, su John Deacon. Io lo descriverei come una persona sensibile e un musicista raffinato. Sei d’accordo?

Si, sono d’accordissimo. John è sempre stato per me, ed è fino ad oggi, una persona molto speciale ed un musicista totalmente sottovalutato perché si è sempre mantenuto sullo sfondo. Mi è sempre piaciuto molto. La morte di Freddie lo ha colpito molto duramente. Lo so.

Ti chiedo del bellissimo ed affascinante Roger Taylor. Tanto è stato detto e scritto su di lui, proprio come per tutti gli altri membri. La sua passione per le donne e per i motori è leggendaria. Puoi dirci qualcosa su di lui a cui hai assistito durante i diversi anni in cui hai lavorato con loro e che non sia molto noto?

Devo correggerti con tutto il rispetto… non tutto è stato scritto o detto su Roger… Lui ed io siamo stati molto vicini molti anni, ad entrambi piaceva fare festa. Ad entrambi è piaciuto vivere a “Sex&Drugs&Rock’n’Roll”, non so se mi spiego! Credetemi, potrei scrivere un altro libro chiamato qualcosa come “Le avventure di R (Roger) e R (Rudi)”. Roger non è solo uno dei migliori batteristi del mondo, è anche un grande compositore, un grande padre e un cittadino molto impegnato politicamente. Inoltre ha una grande voce ed è, a mio parere, sottovalutato come cantante, cosa che ho personalmente sperimentato durante la regia di alcuni dei suoi lavori da solista o con “The Cross” così come il video molto triste “No One But You” che ho avuto il privilegio di dirigere per i Queen.

Rudi, è stato detto che grazie al fatto di aver condiviso casa a Londra in passato, Freddie e Roger andavano molto d’accordo e potevano capirsi a colpo d’occhio: è vero?

“In verità Annamaria, tutti i membri dei Queen andavano molto d’accordo l’uno con l’altro. Erano l’unica band di superstar “democratica” con cui ho avuto il privilegio di lavorare, e ho lavorato con gli Stones, Bon Jovi, Genesis, Police, Oasis, Depeche Mode, Metallica, The Who, Bad Company o RunDMC, ma nessuno di loro era democratico come i Queen. Ma è vero quello che dici sul rapporto tra Freddie e Roger è vero, era speciale”.

Una domanda sul “principe”… Brian May che io definisco “l’eleganza che diventa chitarrista” ma che durante le sessioni di registrazione poteva trasformarsi in un leone, spesso in contrasto con gli altri Queen, tutti grandi perfezionisti. In “I’m Going Slightly Mad”, uno degli ultimi video che hai girato con loro, possiamo vedere il modo in cui Brian guarda un Freddie indebolito dalla malattia ma ancora pieno di spirito combattivo, uno sguardo pieno di amore e non di pietà. Come ti sei sentito quando hai fatto quel grande video?

In primo luogo affermo che Brian è uno dei migliori , se non il migliore chitarrista Rock di sempre. Fino ad oggi mi chiama il suo “pal” (che significa amico intimo) e ne sono molto orgoglioso. “I’m going…” a mio parere, è semplicemente il mio capolavoro per i Queen. Freddie l’ha visto allo stesso modo. Amava guardare questo video fino alle ultime ore della sua vita.

A proposito di “I’m going…”, mi confermi che c’era sir Elton John all’interno del costume da gorilla?

Lo rivelerò nel mio libro “My Friend Freddie”, quindi per favore capisci che non posso dirti tutti i miei segreti ora. Quello che posso dirti, è che c’erano tre personaggi molto famosi presi in considerazione da Freddie per entrare in quel costume: David Bowie, Rod Stewart ed Elton John. Quando io e lui stavamo ultimando il progetto per il video gli è venuta questa idea… Chi è davvero dentro il costume?  Per favore, abbiate pazienza finché non esce il mio libro.

Ti faccio questa domanda come fan accanita dei Queen e divoratrice di libri su Freddie: rimarrò senza parole quando leggerò il tuo libro?

Mi sa di sì. Ci sono molte storie nel mio libro che ti sorprenderanno anche come accanita fan. Te lo prometto! Ci saranno storie che ti faranno ridere, ci saranno storie che ti faranno piangere e ci saranno storie che ti faranno pensare. Sto scrivendo questo libro per i fan principalmente e per il mio sentimento sincero e per l’amore che provo ancora per Freddie, Brian, Roger e John. Avere il privilegio di lavorare con e per Queen per tanti anni è una delle cose più importanti della mia vita!

Torniamo al presente. Posso chiederti cosa ne pensi di Bohemian Rhapsody – il film? Pensi che fosse necessario cambiare la linea temporale di alcuni eventi, tra cui quando la malattia di Freddie è stata condivisa con gli altri membri dei Queen?

Innanzitutto ti dico che sono stato invitato alla prima mondiale a Londra di Bohemian Rhapsody da Brian, Roger e Jim Beach. Li ho anche incontrati in privato quel giorno. Soprattutto Brian non era sicuro del film in quel momento e mi ha chiesto cosa pensassi. Questo è quello che ho detto allora – e questo è quello in cui credo ancora oggi: ho detto: “Brian, questo film introdurrà la musica dei Queen nel mondo delle nuove generazioni e accrescerà la platea di fans e di pubblico. Per questo motivo il film è perfetto. Hai fatto dei Queen, un “monumento” con questo film. Congratulazioni. Ma ci sono cose come regista che critico ma non te le dico in un giorno di gioia come nel giorno in cui la tua prima mondiale. E: “Bohemian Rhapsody” sarà un successo mondiale”. .Beh, dovrei aver avuto ragione…che ne dici?

Personalmente penso che questo biopic abbia reso le giovani generazioni più consapevoli della poliedricità e della forza dei Queen e della maestosa figura di Freddie, e allo stesso tempo ha fatto togliere i loro dischi dai cassetti di chi li ascoltava negli anni 70 e 80. Tu cosa ne pensi?

E’ esattamente così ed è proprio quello che avevo previsto per Brian, Roger e Jim la sera della prima mondiale a Londra. Come forse saprai, alcune delle scene del film “Bohemian Rhapsody” sono basate sul mio lavoro creativo e su alcune delle mie esperienze personali. Per esempio quando Freddie dice nel film “Sono solo una prostituta del Rock’n’Roll mia cara!”, ogni Fan dei Queen che ha visto i miei documentari sa, che non la disse in una conferenza stampa, ma durante un’intervista faccia a faccia fra lui, Freddie, ed un certo ragazzo dai capelli lunghi, Rudi Dolezal. Sono orgoglioso che questa intervista sia diventata così iconica. Anche molte foto dei miei video sono state ricreate a dimostrazione che il mio lavoro non era troppo male.

Brian e Roger continuano a portare la loro musica in tutto il mondo e i loro concerti sono continuamente esauriti. Personalmente, li ho visti a New York nell’agosto 2019 e a Sydney nel febbraio 2020. Ho viaggiato per migliaia di chilometri e ho speso un sacco di soldi per sentire quelle grandi vibrazioni. Freddie non c’era e nemmeno John, ma su quel palco loro erano comunque eccezionali. Qual è la tua opinione su questo progetto Queen – Adam Lambert?

Penso che sia del tutto legittimo per due grandissimi musicisti come Roger Taylor e Brian May che hanno scritto successi mondiali dei Queen, suonare le loro canzoni sul palco anche senza Freddie e John. Ero totalmente dietro il progetto Queen e Paul Rodgers perché Freddie una volta mi disse che adorava Paul quando Paul era nella band Gratis con la hit mondiale “All Right Now” e Freddie come fan tra il pubblico. Ho anche girato “Queen & Paul Rodgers” nell’aprile 2005 a Budapest – quasi 20 anni dopo che ho girato Queen in there line up 1986 sul “Magic Tour”. Per le persone che non hanno mai visto i Queen con Freddie & John, la line up attuale è ancora una “Queen Experience”. Ero lì quando Jim Beach ha inventato l’idea di “QUEEN plus…” – ho fatto dei video e ho pensato che fosse un’idea geniale. D’altra parte capisco anche le persone e i fan che dicono di preferire i Queen nella formazione originale con Freddie e John. Posso capire entrambe le parti. Per me è molto personale.

Nel settembre del 2019, il giorno del compleanno di Freddie, il 5 settembre, ho incontrato Peter Freenston a Montreux. L’ho sentito parlare di Freddie e ci sono stati momenti in cui aveva ancora gli occhi lucidi, dopo tutti questi anni. Durante un giro in barca, appena siamo passati dinanzi la Duck House, era veramente emozionato. Sai una cosa? Succede anche a me a volte, e non l’ho mai incontrato personalmente: pensi che sia normale?

Sì, è normale. Molti fan mi dicono cose simili. E un’altra cosa: Peter Freestone è uno dei miei migliori amici, se non il migliore amico della mia vita di oggi . Abbiamo un progetto segreto insieme… A proposito: sarò a Montreux con Montreux Celebration e il Mercury Phoenix Trust 2021.

Allora ci vediamo là! Le ultime domande vorrei fartele su quello che è considerato il “Santo Graal” dei Queen, che è il video del concerto a Knebworth. Freddie sapeva che era il suo ultimo concerto? C’è uno scambio di sguardi tra lui e Mary Austin mentre lasciava il palco col suo mantello rosso… significava “è finita”?

Personalmente non credo proprio. Non c’era tristezza intorno quella sera, solo gioia ed ero super concentrato nelle riprese del concerto. Posso dirti che un bel pò di quello che ho girato è inedito fino ad oggi, tra l’altro.

Tu hai detto in alcune dichiarazioni precedenti, che c’è qualche altro filmato di questo concerto storico a parte che è già stato visto, in particolare qualcosa girato da te nel backstage. C’è qualcosa di meraviglioso che tieni nascosto e che non abbiamo ancora visto dunque?

Mi sa di sì…Ho parlato proprio di questo nel mio show BACKSTAGE No.29 sul mio canale YouTube. C’è molto di più quello che ho girato a Knebworth, di quello che il pubblico ha già visto.

Se Freddie fosse ancora con noi oggi, cosa penserebbe del tuo approccio ai video musicali considerate tutte le nuove tecnologie esistenti? Ti direbbe qualcosa del tipo “Dai Rudi, facciamo qualcosa di straordinario e saranno tutti stupiti”?

Questo è sempre stato il motto di Freddie e dei Queen. Certo che probabilmente lo avrebbe detto.

Sappiamo che l’anima di Freddie aveva due lati spesso in antitesi tra loro, uno pubblico e uno privato come solo i più grandi sanno essere. Rudi, dimmi, quanto è stato bello vederlo scendere dal palco e tornare ad essere un essere umano, anche se incredibilmente unico?

Penso che ci fossero ancora più sfaccettature nella sua personalità. Freddie era semplicemente una delle persone più affascinanti, talentuose, intelligenti, più dolci e più belle che abbia mai incontrato, pieno di maestosità, stile e buon gusto.

Grazie per il tuo tempo Rudi. Avrei altre 1991 domande da farti, 1991 proprio come l’anno in cui Freddie ci ha lasciati ed è passato dall’essere una rockstar a diventare una leggenda…

His name is Rudi Dolezal, he is a producer-director of Austrian origin, whose name, for lovers of the genre, is inextricably linked to that of Queen and Freddie Mercury in particular, of whom he was a personal friend. He will soon publish a special book about Freddie Mercury, where he will tell the Queen’s frontman from a very personal point of view made of memories and stories. Interview by Annamaria Martorana.

Rudi, his is the first thing I’d like to ask you: “Is there a question you’d like to answer that you’ve never been asked?”

There is a question that I like to answer, because it is the most important thing To me personally in many years! The Question is: why did you write the book “My friend Freddie” – and why now – so many years after freddie’s death? Here my answer: Freddie was my friend. Its not easy to write a book about a friend…very emotional. I waited 25 years before I started. But after I had to read so many books about Freddie who were NOT true and had so many wrong things in it – I started 2017. My book was originally called “MY STORY” – before I came up with the title “My Friend Freddie”.

And that’s what my book is all about: My Story – the story of a young, long haired Hippie from Vienna who wanted to become one of the best music video directors of the world.  And Freddie became my mentor, my teacher and – yes – my friend. My book in NOT another biography – but includes  only stories, adventures and secrets which I personally was part of. Not “He said – She said” – but incidents, situations, parties, film sets, jokes where I was present. Often I  played  not an  unimportant role as a Director, teammate or – yes – friend.

I tell Untold Stories in my book, most of them I have never told before: What happened behind the scenes on video shoots, how I travelled with and for Freddie & Queen halfway around the world, from London to New York, India to Brazil, Montreux to Budapest. Freddie on tour, Freddie the rascal, Freddie as patron, Freddie the private person – right up until the very last interview with him and the last ever time Freddie stood in front of a camera – my camera (during “Days of our Lives”…).  And I still remember the terrible phone call from his manager and to this day my dear friend Jim Beach, when he told me – that Freddie was gone…

All this and much more is in my book – together with many previously unpublished photos and artwork from my personal archive, never before seen storyboards and concepts of my videos and special Bonus sensations like an exact drawing from Freddie´s house and especially the “sitting room” in Garden Lodge – in which many scenes and chapters  of my book play out so that every reader can relate where was what and FEEL himself into my chapters and stories.  Let me tell you – I write this book for one big reason – I want to share my great stories with all Freddie- and Queen-Fans around  the world – and : I am sure, Freddie would want me to write it. This book is a work of love for my friend Freddie.

Your job as a producer and as a film director is going great! Recently you won the Platinum Remi Award for directing German rock star Peter Maffay’s video, and that was after you already got the Gold Remi Award for the “Get Together” video; how do you personally value the importance of these awards for you and for your career?

Awards like the PLATINUM REMI (which is considered as the „industry Oscar“ here in the USA)  and an award which famous Directors like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola won before me are very important – like the GRAMMY awards for my Freddie documentary and my  Miles Davis documentary or the “Golden Rose of Montreux” for “Queen-Magic Years”. They show that my work and creativity is understood by important  international people and this is  rewarding – Yes. But, when one of my lovely sons (RUBY, 17 years old or BENNY, 14 ) say to me: “Papa,  I love you!” —> that is to me much more important than any GRAMMY or PLATINUM AWARD or now the “ROCK’N’ROLL HALL OF FAME” (latest honor).

I’m sure you’re used to being asked lots of questions about your intense partnership with Queen and with Freddie, as you had a special friendship with him, but I would like you to tell us something about the other members of the band as well; for instance tell us something about John Deacon: I would describe him as a sensitive person as well as a refined musician. Do you agree?

John always was to me – and is until today –  a very special  person and totally underrated musician because he kept himself always in the background. I always liked him a lot – Freddie´s passing hit him really hard. I know that.
Now let’s talk about the handsome and fascinating Roger Taylor. Everything has been said and written about him, just like all of the other members; his passion for women and for engines are legendary.

Can you tell us something about him that you witnessed during the several years you worked with them that maybe is not very well known?

I have to correct you with all respect: NOT everything has been written or said about Roger – he and I were very close many years – we both liked to party. And we both liked “Sex&Drugs&Rock’n’Roll” – believe me —> I could write another book called something like “The Adventures of R (Roger) and R (Rudi)… Roger is not only one of the best drummers in the world – he is also  a great composer, a great father and a very political thinking citizen – we often talked about politics . Also he has a great voice and is – in my opinion – underrated as a singer which I especially experienced during me directing some of his solo work or with “The Cross” as well as the very sad Video “NoOne But You” (Only the Good Die young) which I had the privilege to direct for Queen.

It has been said that due to having shared a place to live in London in the past, Freddie and Roger got along very well together, they could understand each other at a glance: is this true?

All Queen members of the original Queen got along really well with each other – and Queen was the only “democratic” Superstar Band I had the privilege to work with – and I worked with lot –  like The Stones, Bon Jovi, Genesis, Police, Oasis, Depeche Mode,Metallica,The Who,Bad Company or RunDMC – NONE of them was as democratic as QUEEN. But it is true – the relationship between Freddie and Roger was special.

And at last our “prince”… Brian May. Elegance turned guitarist, during the recording sessions he could transform into a lion, often arguing with Freddie. In “I’m Going Slightly Mad”, one of the last videos you took with them, we can see the way Brian looks at a weakened by the illness but still full of fighting spirit Freddie, a look full of love and not of pity. How did you feel when you took that great video?

First : Brian is one of the best – if not THE best  Rock guitarists ever. Period.Until this day he calls me his “pal” (which means close friend) and I am very proud of it. “Slightly Mad” is simply in my opinion my masterpiece for Queen. Freddie saw this the same way. He loved to watch this Video until the very end of his live.

As we’re talking about “I’m Going Slightly Mad”, can you confirm that there was sir Elton John in the gorilla costume?

I will reveal this in my book „My Friend Freddie” – so please understand that I can’t tell you all my secrets now. What I can tell you is the following: there were three very famous people considered by Freddie to be in the Gorilla costume: David Bowie, Rod Stewart and Elton John. When he and I were doing the concept for the video he came up with this idea… Who is REALLY in the costume ?  – please have patience until my book comes out.

I’m sure you’ve already been asked everything about Freddie, and we’ll probably have to wait for the Italian release of your latest book “My friend Freddie” to find out about something that we still don’t know. I’m asking you this question as a hardcore fan: will I remain speechless when I read your book?

Well, there are many stories in my book which will surprise you – even as a hard core fan – that I can promise you for sure ! There will be stories in my book which will make you LAUGH – there will be stories in my book which will make you CRY and there will be stories in my book that will make you THINK. I am writing this book for the fans mainly and from my heard with all my love that I still feel for Freddie, Brian, Roger and John. To have the privilege to work with and for QUEEN for so many years is one of the most important things in my life!

Let’s go back to our current times. Can I ask you what you think about Bohemian Rhapsody – the movie? Do you think it was necessary to change the timeline of some events, including when Freddie’s illness was shared with the other members of Queen?

I was invited to the world premiere in London of Bohemian Rhapsody by Brian, Roger and Jim Beach which I found very nice of my friends. I also met them in privat that day. Especially Brian was not sure at the time and asked me what I think about the movie. This is what I said then – and this is what I still believe today: I said: “Brian, this movie will introduce QUEEN music to complete new generations of fans and audiences. For this reason  the movie is perfect. You made Queen a “monument” with this movie. Congratulations. But there are things as a filmmaker and Director that I criticize but not on a day of joy like on the day  your world premiere. And: “Bohemian Rhapsody” will be a world success.”. Well,I should be right…

I personally think that this biopic made younger generations more aware of Queen and of Freddie’s majestic figure, and at the same time it made older fans take their records out of their drawers. What do you think about it?

Sure, that is exactly right and exactly what I predicted to Brian, Roger and Jim on the evening of the World Premiere in London. As you might know some of the scenes in the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” are based on my creative work and on some of my personal experiences. For example when Freddie says in the movie “I am just a Rock’n’Roll Prostitute my dear!” – every Queen Fan who saw my documentaries knows – it was not a press conference but a person to person Interview of Freddie with a certain  long haired Rudi Dolezal who got this statement out of Freddie. I am proud this interview became so iconic. Another reference to DoRo is the party – which is 1:1 copied  and re-staged of my famous Freddie Video “Living On My Own”. Also many shots of my videos were re-created which shows that my work was not too bad (haha).

Brian and Roger keep on bringing their music around the world and their gigs are continuously sold out. I last saw them in New York in August 2019 and in Sydney in February 2020. I travelled thousands of miles and I spent a lot of money on order to feel those great vibes. Freddie was not there and neither was John, but still they were outstanding. What is your opinion about this Queen + Adam Lambert project?

I think it is totally legitimate for two great musicians like Roger and Brian who both wrote Queen World Hits to play their songs on stage even without Freddie and John. I was totally behind the project QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS because Freddie once told me that he adored Paul when Paul was in the Band FREE with the world Hit “All Right Now” and Freddie as a fan  in the audience.

I also filmed “Queen & Paul Rodgers” April 2005 in Budapest – almost 20 Years after I filmed Queen in there original line up 1986 on the “Magic Tour”. For people who never saw Queen with Freddie & John,  the current line up is still a “Queen Experience”. I was there when Jim Beach invented the idea of “QUEEN plus…” – and I did videos and thought it was a genius idea. On the other hand I also understand people and fans who say they prefer Queen in the original line up with Freddie and John. I can understand both sides. To me its very personal.

Last September 2019, on Freddie’s birthday, I met Peter Freenston in Montreux. I heard him talk about Freddie and there were moments he had weepy eyes still after all these years. During a busy ride in particular, he almost years in his eyes as we passed in front of Duck House. You often say that you are moved too when you think of him. You know what? It happens to me sometimes as well, and I’ve never met him personally: do you think this is normal?

Yes this is normal. Many fans tell me similar things. And one more thing: Peter Freestone is one of my best friends – if not THE best friend in my life today . We have a secret project together… By the way: I will be in Montreux with Montreux Celebration and the Mercury Phoenix Trust 2021.

The last questions are about what is considered as Queen’s “Holy Grail”, that is the video of the concert in Knebworth. Did Freddie know that it was his last concert? Looking into each other’s eyes with Mary Austin as he was leaving the stage, did that mean “it’s over“?

I personally  don’t think so. There was no sadness around – just joy and I was super focused filming – quite a lot of what I filmed is unreleased to this day, by the way.

You’ve said in some other previous statements that there is some other footage of this historic concert on top of what has already been seen, in particular something filmed by you in the backstage. Is there something wonderful that you keep that we still haven’t seen?

I am talking about that in lenght in  in my show BACKSTAGE No.29 —> go to my YouTube channel please and watch it – there is quite a lot more what I filmed in Knebworth than what the public knows.

If Freddie was still with us today, what do you think his approach to music videos would be considering all new existing technology? Would he say to you something like “Come on Rudi, let’s do something stunning and they’ll all be amazed”?

That was always Freddie´s and Queen´s motto – sure he would probably say that.

We know that Freddie’s soul had two complete different sides, a public one and a private one; how good was it to see him get off stage and go back to being a human being, although a unique one?

I think there was even more “faccettes” to his personally – Freddie was simply one of the most fascinating, talented, intelligent, sweetest and nicest persons I ever met – with a lot of “Grandezza” and style & good taste.

Thank you very much Rudi, I really appreciate the time you had for me. I’d have another 1991 more questions to ask you, 1991 just like the year Freddie left us and he went from being a rockstar to becoming a legend…
